FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
In response to the recent Supreme Court ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the Schoharie County Democratic Committee has released the following statement:
The Schoharie County Democratic Committee condemns in the strongest possible terms the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade and the right to safe and legal abortion. This decision takes away the right that Americans have had for half a century, allowing us to make our own reproductive choices. As Democrats, we have raised concerns about the threat to abortion rights – and the underlying right for people to control their own bodies – for a long time. The Supreme Court now allows state governments to force rape and incest victims to endure birth, without exceptions for the health of the mother, and to invade and intrude on our lives in the most intimate and personal of ways. Justice Thomas’s statement indicates that members of the Court intend to eliminate additional freedoms, namely the right to birth control and the right to marry who we love. It is the time for Democratic leaders to act swiftly to prevent further harm to the progress we have made, and it’s up to us as local communities to ensure they do so. The elections before us – both the August 23rd primary and the November 8th general – are critical. Get out and vote. Bring your friends. To our Republican and Independent friends, family, and community members: we urge you to step away from the radical Right agenda that is tearing our country apart and taking away our rights and freedoms. We urge all citizens of Schoharie County, no matter what your political affiliation, to vote for candidates who will protect the rights of all Americans.
