Schoharie Democrats to Meet Congressional Hopefuls
MIDDLEBURGH—A reorganized and invigorated Schoharie County Democratic Committee will meet primary challengers for the 21st Congressional District on Wednesday, March 2 at 6 p.m. at the Community Center, 138 Cotton Hill Rd., Middleburgh. The committee’s regular monthly meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. Democrats planning to meet the candidates please click here or send an email to info@schohariedemocrats.org indicating you plan to attend this event.
The candidates will face one another in the June 28 primary. The winner will face the Republican incumbent in November.
Committee Chair Theresa Heary said the state’s redistricting maps that followed the 2020 Census moved Schoharie County from Democratic Congressman Antonio Delgado’s 19th District to the 21st.
“We were sorry to lose Congressman Delgado,” said Heary. “He was an inspiration to all of us and has a great future ahead of him.”
“We’re prepared now, though, to put our energy and resources into turning the 21st blue,” she added.
The committee expects to hear from two candidates: Matt Castelli and Matt Putorti.
Castelli, a resident of Saratoga County, is a former CIA officer and Director for Counterterrorism at the National Security Council who served in both the Obama and Trump administrations. His campaign website is: https://castelliforcongress.com
Putorti, of Whitehall, is an attorney and the son of third-generation immigrants who run a grocery store there. He served in AmeriCorps and is active in community affairs. His campaign website is: https://putortiforcongress.com
Heary said redistricting did not significantly affect the state’s election districts for Senate and Assembly. Both of those seats are currently held by Republicans.
Heary said county Democrats are talking to several potential candidates for the state races and encourages those interested in running to contact the local committee.
