Happy February!
There are plenty of items to share, this February day.
Redistricting and our Congressional Representative
On February 1, the NYS Legislature approved new district maps for the US House of Representatives. These new districts will favor the Democrats. It is predicted that Democrats will gain up to 3 seats in the House from NY State. This NYTimes article provides additional information.
Sadly, we have been redistricted out of NY 19, so Antonio Delgado will no longer be our representative. Schoharie County has been placed in District 21, so we are now represented by Republican Elyse Stefanik. This will make Representative Delgado’s seat more secure, but it is a loss for us. He has been an inspiration for many years.
There are several candidates vying for the Democratic nomination to challenge Stefanik, including Matt Castelli, Matt Purtorti, Bridie Farrell and Ezra Watson. You can meet them on Wednesday, March 2 at 6:00 PM at the Community Center at 138 Cotton Hill Road in Middleburgh. Please RSVP here. The primary election will take place at the end of June.
State Senate and Assembly Districts
We will remain in NYS Senate District 51, which is currently held by (R) Pete Oberacker and Assembly District 102, which is currently held by (R) Chris Tague. We are talking to several potential candidates. It is not the time to be shy. If you have ever considered running for office, reach out.
Meet the candidates
At 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday March 2, there will be a reception for the above-mentioned Democratic candidates who want to run for the US House of Representatives. We will also invite State Senate and Assembly candidates. This will be before our full committee meeting at 7:30 p.m. Soup and bread will be served.
Would you like to be a committee member?
Being a Democrat in Schoharie County can be hard. Yet, there are many of us! Join our group of thoughtful, engaged citizens, who are working to bring about a more just society. As a member, you are technically an elected official, representing the Democrats from your town on the committee. There is only an election if there are more than 4 interested people from the same town. Are you interested in learning more? Please fill out this form, to let us know which town you would like to represent, and come to our next meeting on March 2 at 7:30 at the Middleburgh Community Center.
If we work together, big things can happen.
That said, it does take time and work.
