January Newsletter

Happy New Year!  All of us extend our best wishes to you for a healthy and productive 2022.  We look forward to a new year with new opportunities to expand on the progress we've started and engage with more neighbors to make Schoharie County the best it can be.

“REMEMBER THIS IN THE DARKEST MOMENTS, WHEN THE WORK DOESN’T SEEM WORTH IT, AND CHANGE SEEMS JUST OUT OF REACH: OUT OF OUR WILLINGNESS TO PUSH THROUGH COMES A TREMENDOUS POWER… USE IT.” - Stacey Abrams

MEETINGS

SCDC Communication Committee:

The Communication Committe will meet via Zoom in mid-January.  If you are interested in participating in this one-hour meeting, please fill out the Doodle Poll here.

We have established an SCDC Committee spreadsheet to share contact / communication information with all.  If you have any updates, please let Gail Wilkins or Jerrine Corallo know and they will adjust the spreadsheet accordingly.

Schoharie County Democratic Committee:

Monday, January 24th, 7:30 - 9:00 PM

The January meeting for the SCDC will take place over Zoom.  The link will be sent out to all committee members, via email, prior to the meeting.  If you are not on the Committee but would like to attend, please email info@schohariedemocrats.org.

Starting a Town Democratic Committee:

Monday, January 31, 8 PM

A town Democratic committee exists to support town Democratic candidates. Many towns in Schoharie County do not have town committees, or if they do, the town committees have been inactive for a long time.  Democrats can't win without a team!  On Monday, January 31 at 8 PM, Jackie Hadam will teach what you need to know in order to start a town committee. This meeting will be held via Zoom.  If you'd like to attend the meeting, please RSVP here. We will send you a link for the Zoom meeting beforehand.  Committees are best in community! Bring a friend.

President Biden Appoints Jim Barber:

Last month, President Joe Biden appointed Jim Barber as the New York State Executive Director of the Farm Service Agency. The following statements are excerpted from the December 9, 2021, release from whitehouse.gov.

"James Barber is the fifth generation to operate his family’s 500-acre highly diversified vegetable farm and greenhouse operation. Mr. Barber’s years of dedication to the agriculture industry include serving on Cornell University’s College of Agriculture Advisory Board, the New York Farm Bureau State Board of Directors, and as President of the NY State Vegetable Growers Association. Jim was a founding member and President of NY Farms; a forward-thinking organization which brought together non-traditional partners in the food system to work toward common goals and created the very first Farm to School program in the country."

"During the Obama-Biden Administration, Mr. Barber served as the New York State Executive Director of the Farm Service Agency (FSA).  During his eight years as head of the New York FSA, Mr. Barber made improvements in the Farm Loan program with dramatically increased efficiency.  He was proactive in reaching out to minority and underserved communities, from urban farms in New York City to the sovereign Native American nations across the state.  And he initiated nationally recognized changes in the scope and delivery of farm programs to expanded opportunities for all farmers, large and small, rural and urban."

A December 30, 2021 Associated Press article, "Slow-motion insurrection: How the GOP seizes election power," written by Nicholas Riccardi, underscores how important our work is this coming year and beyond. Be sure to check out the article here.
