TWO BALLOT PROPOSALS THIS NOVEMBER: https://www.elections.ny.gov/2023BallotProposals.html

Prop One will give small city school districts the same financial structure that big city and large suburban districts already have; Prop Two extends the debt period for sewage projects for another 10 years so it doesn't expire 1/1/2024. Voting Yes will give towns and small cities more flexibility, in our view, a good thing. Read the propositions before you vote so you know what you want to do on Election Day!

PASSING OF NOTE: OUR BELOVED "JOE B"

Joseph Bozicevich of Schoharie

by Sarah Meredith, Gilboa rep

The members of the Schoharie County Democratic Committee are mourning the sudden loss of our beloved Joe B., Joseph Bozicevich, of the Town of Schoharie. On October 3, 2023, we lost a champion of community and democracy. The first words from all were of his kindness, generosity of spirit, optimism, cheerfulness, encouragement of others, and open mindedness. Schoharie County has lost a great man.

A long time resident of the Town of Schoharie, Joe ran for town offices, served on the planning board, and represented Schoharie on the county-level Democratic Committee. He rebuilt his own house and helped others after the flooding of Irene. For the last few years he served as chair of the fundraising committee, initiating on-line auctions and helping put together the annual FDR banquets that brought the whole community together.

A veteran who served his country; an American who fought for the values of fairness, inclusion and truth that undergirded his own belief system, Joe recently spearheaded fundraisers to help the people of Ukraine. Having seen first hand the devastation of war, understanding deeply the poison of misinformation and the distortion of propaganda from his time in the special services, Joe threw himself into many community activities that built trust, caring and hope. He strongly supported the Joshua Project among others, and embodied the democratic spirit at the SCDC booth at the county fair.

Many of the newest members of the SCDC speak of Joe as welcoming them, encouraging them and being an inspiration as they got started in their own service to the county’s democratic community.

Personally I met Joe Bozicevich before I joined the SCDC, at the FDR dinner two years ago. During our first conversation about pulling together as a nation, he began quoting Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. Needless to say, I was moved by the depth of his passion for a unified democracy. Soon after, I joined the SCDC as a representative from Gilboa and took on the role of co-chair of the communications committee. Joe always gave me his honest opinion in a direct way, advising me and openly appreciating the intention behind the work before offering critical feedback. This was a beautiful model of leadership, to which I still aspire.

A man who loved to dance, he spent the last part of his life struggling with old injuries and new disabilities. Joe’s generous community spirit will remain with all who knew him for years to come. The full committee offers its deepest condolences to his wife, Linda, and all of his family.

Services were held October 10 at Lady of the Valley Catholic Church, Main Street, Middleburgh, NY

PITCH IN AND KEEP DEMOCRATS ON THE BALLOT!

The Schoharie County Democratic Committee supports Democrats running for local offices, and is planning for 2024.  If you saw candidate yard signs, these were likely produced with the support of the SCDC. Some candidates requested support in getting materials to share door-to-door information about voting and to raise awareness of their campaigns. SCDC created a  fund to help with other expenses, like community gatherings, promotional materials, or even postage. The Committee wants to replenish funds to take on the challenges of 2024. Consider donating to SCDC through ActBlue here. Or send a check payable to SCDC TREASURER, Jean Burton, P.O. Box 46, Gallupville, NY 12073.

Help spread the word that when there are strong candidates representing democratic values, we can create a brighter future in Schoharie County and our country. There are lots of ways to help beyond donating: represent your town on the SCDC, help with organizing events like the FDR dinner and the summer BBQ,  knock on doors to inform voters, make snacks for meet-the-candidate gatherings,  or offer to drive neighbors to early voting in the Fall of 2024. Getting active in your town or village by attending local board meetings and pitching in for community building projects helps too.

You can sign up  for a variety of activities, just email info@schohariedemocrats.org
